Make a Difference in Helping Children Learn to Read by Volunteering at Camp Community Storehouse at Westlake Academy.
Immediate Need
Date: July 5 to July 22, 2011
Time: 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (Monday through Firday)
Number of Volunteers: 50 volunteers needed each day
Consider donating a few volunteer hours or a few days to help children improve their reading skills and develop good character traits. Community Storehouse is dedicated to the well-being and education of the children in our community. Children are identified who are below reading level and referred to this reading remediation camp from Keller ISD and Northwest ISD. Serving over 170 children, Camp Community Storehouse will meet at Westlake Academy from July 5 through July 22nd from 8:30am to 1:00pm (Monday through Friday, with the exception of the July 4th holiday). Not only will Community Storehouse be “rebuilding reading skills” for children in need of remediation assistance, but also in “building character” in the many dedicated youth volunteers gaining supervised service learning skills. We will need about 50 volunteers each day to make this a successful event. Volunteers will be needed to:
- check in children and volunteers each morning
- assist in serving and supervising breakfast, lunch and snacks in the cafeteria and clean-up tasks
- assist reading teachers within the classroom by reading individually with children, collating materials to be distributed, serving as mentors, etc.
- actively participate in the physical fitness games for children
- assist with music activities and setting up for different activities
- do clerical duties, answer phone, make calls, prepare handouts for distribution
- assist with following safe arrival and departure of children at the traffic drop off/pick-up areas
- assist guest speakers with set-up and preparations, do book distributions, etc.
