ORGANIZATIONAL MISSION, OVERVIEW, AND POSITION GOALS
A Mission of Help and Hope to People in Need
The mission of Cornerstone Assistance Network (Cornerstone) is
to unite with others in Christian love to meet the needs of people.
An Overview of Cornerstone Assistance Network
Cornerstone was established in 1992 to address the growing needs of individuals and families struggling under the burden of poverty in Tarrant County, Texas. Beginning as one person’s response to a neighborhood family who was in need of food, that person—Mike Doyle, Cornerstone’s chief executive officer—and others from his church formed the 501 c(3) organization in direct response to local gaps in services, and to assist and empower churches to better serve the poor and needy in their communities.
Since its inception, Cornerstone leaders have firmly believed that community partnerships and collaborations are essential for fulfilling their vision of helping thousands of needy people effectively and cost efficiently. Most recently, in 2007 for example, Cornerstone provided over 78,876 units of service to people in Tarrant County by partnering with 12 local, state, and federal government agencies, 17 community foundations, 50 local businesses, and 41 community nonprofit and faith-based organizations (FBOs) including 22 churches. By weaving together a network of organizations, volunteers, and financial support, Cornerstone has consistently served thousands of the County’s disadvantaged residents each year with free food, clothing, and furniture; free medical, educational, and employment services; along with subsidized housing and home ownership opportunities. Its diverse network has allowed Cornerstone to maximize its social impact over its fifteen years of service.
Since its humble beginnings, Cornerstone has grown to become a nationally recognized, broad-based organization providing 13 direct service programs in six separate locations throughout Tarrant County. The organization shares a blended identity as both a community intermediary as well as a direct service provider. With an annual operating budget of $1.8 million in 2007, Cornerstone currently provides a large, diverse mix of social ministries. Unfortunately, the battle to alleviate poverty in the area continues along with the need for additional community programs and services. In response, Cornerstone has launched a $6.2 million capital campaign for the purchase and renovation of a new facility that will greatly increase its organizational capacity and ability to help meet this need.
Currently led by its 23-member Board of Directors, Cornerstone has retained an architectural design firm to develop a master building plan for the new facility, which is located on a two-acre site at 3500 Noble Avenue in Fort Worth, Texas. The facility will be renovated specifically to provide much needed space for many of Cornerstone’s existing programs as well as newly developed ones. Working with Cornerstone senior staff members, the architects are creating a design that will not only accommodate the necessary space in the building, but will provide a facility that will be cost efficient, conducive to good staff and volunteer work, and welcoming to all who enter it for services.
Providing over two times the current space of the programs and offices, the new facility encompasses over 49,000 square feet of office and warehouse space—including 10,000 square feet of cold storage. The new site will offer:
· increased space and capacity for emergency food, clothing, and furniture needs;
· improved and expanded intake, referral, and counseling offices;
· additional space for enhanced job readiness and job training programs;
· multipurpose rooms to accommodate various work training programs, training groups, staff/Board committee meetings, and inter-agency and community meetings;
· increased space for volunteer training and work areas along with seasonal service opportunities for special events, e.g., Cornerstone Christmas toy drive;
· expanded administrative offices.
Development Operation Goals:
Over the years, Cornerstone has built a strong, diverse base of volunteer and financial support providing the organizational capacity required to sustain it. In 2007, these sources of support included:
Ø Federal, state, county, and municipal contracts that support many of the housing and case management services provided. The Cornerstone Comprehensive Care Program, for example, has been awarded over $2.1 million dollars by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) since 1997 for the ongoing provision of case management services. Total grant funding received in 2007 alone was $650,000, 36% of the annual budget.
Ø Private organizations and churches that contributed over $220,000—12% of the annual budget;
Ø Individuals who contributed over 19% of the annual budget—$344,000;
Ø Private foundations contributed over $200,000 (11%) with the majority as “pass through” funding to other organizations;
Ø Rents, service fees, and other miscellaneous income provided the other 22% of the annual budget—$396,000.
With the recent approval of a capital campaign—including $1.9 million for the building purchase and $2,412,911 for renovations and development reserve costs—to seek philanthropic support from individuals, foundations, churches, and corporations, it is expected that the amount received for general operations will fall below the total funds needed to operate the agency as a whole. The Development operation will strive to meet the annual revenue shortfall through a variety of fund raising programs that includes major gifts, bequests, direct mail, special events, and tribute gifts given in honor or in memory of a friend or loved one.
